Near-Future Fiction

I recently read Cory Doctorow’s Overclocked short stories. For those of you not familiar with Cory’s work, I can best describe it as science fiction that is set in the near-future, and always with a twist.

Some science fiction is obviously set in the future-that-my-grandchildrens-grandchildren-will-never-see future. Cory’s vision of the future is closer to what maybe my children (if I had any) would see. It’s grounded in current technology, and extended enough that it is visionary, but still believable. And then, throw in some zombies.

But wait, there’s more… Cory actually gets the power of the internet and information freedom. You can download his stories and novels for free, in multiple formats, under a generous Creative Commons license. You can read them, share them, and in most cases remix them, but you cannot ever under any circumstances restrict them.

If you are a sci-fi fan, or a fan of technology, you should check out Cory’s writing. Head over to craphound.com and poke around. Check out the Overclocked stories. Read a novel. You won’t regret it!
