How To Eat At Home and Not Save Money

What? Don’t you eat at home to SAVE money? You would think so….
Today we decided to have a simple dinner of bread, cheese, olives, and wine. It’s a pleasant, simple, delicious, and (usually) inexpensive dinner. We decided that a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape from Kermit Lynch would really hit the spot, and some of this amazing truffle cheese that we have found before. The only place we have found the cheese is at Whole Foods, so we headed there for a little dinner shopping.
Cool! They still have the cheese (Boschetto al Tartufo). And look! Here’s another one with truffles (Brillat Savarin with Truffles)! Cool! Let’s get both! Ok, a loaf of Acme’s levian walnut bread, some olives, and let’s see if they have the wine, that will save a trip to Kermit Lynch. Hey! Here’s a bottle! And about what we would pay at Kermit Lynch, let’s just get it here. Sounds good so far. We found everything in one trip, and even found a new cheese to try. And, no line at the checkout — amazing! Oh… the bill. Ouch! $85 bucks for dinner…. Oh well…
But, we’re not done yet! One more errand — gotta hit The Spanish Table for some ingredients for a palella later this week. Hey! Look at that — they have pimientos de Padron! (If you have been to Spain and been to a tapas place, you have definitely seen these on the menu. They are everywhere in Spain. But we have not seen them for sale here until now). Wow, we have to try these tonight. That will make a nice little plate with the bread and cheese. Ah, I see these are a specialty item since they are difficult to find here…. $7.00 for a 1/4 pound package. Okay, gotta do it…. we have not had these for ages.
So, for our nice, eat-at-home-and-save-money dinner, we managed to spend almost $92.00. I guess the saving money thing didn’t quite work out. On the other hand, that was a great meal!
