Light me Up

Who feels like a photowalk? One of my Flickr friends, Håkan Dahlström, will be visiting from Sweden this week, and he wants to do some shooting while he’s here.

We will be meeting this Wednesday (November 4th) at the corner of Montgomery and Market, and head out through Chinatown and maybe North Beach, depending on what people feel like.

Then on Sunday (November 8th) we will be meeting in San Francisco around 4PM for another photowalk. The location for the Sunday walk has not been determined yet. We will probably decide on a location during the Wednesday photowalk.

With the sun going down earlier, we will have a chance to do some night shooting before everything closes. Come on out and shoot with us, and pass the word along.

Update: You can RSVP for the photowalks on upcoming.org:
Wednesday – Chinatown
Sunday – Location TBD

A Bench At Night

Last night I joined a large group of photographers at the Ferry Building in San Francisco for a nighttime photowalk. We shot around Pier 14 and the spider sculpture before splitting off into a couple of groups. There were lots of new faces there, which is always nice to see.

You can find my set from the evening on flickr.

Say Hello On A Night Like This

Next week, Natalie Dybisz (Miss Aniela on Flickr) will be hosting some photowalks sponsored by Microsoft, Samy’s Camera and Eye-Fi. I will be joining Thomas Hawk and others at the Ferry Building on Monday at 6:30 pm. If you’re going to be in the bay area, plan on joining up. It should be an interesting group.

You can find the event on upcoming.

Solitary Fisherman

Tonight I met up with Gary Hegenbart and Andrew Lighten for a photowalk along the San Francisco bay toward the Golden Gate Bridge. The skies were threatening rain, but it held off until we had finished the walk. This is one of the first photos that I made on the walk.

I met Andrew during Photowalking 7 back in 2007. Andrew may win the Longest Journey To A Photowalk award for this one. He arrived from Australia this morning, and drove in to San Francisco to shoot this afternoon.

Phone Call From Hell

Monday night I joined Thomas Hawk and Justin Korn for a nighttime photo shoot. We experimented with light painting using flashlights and color gels.

It was a lot of fun, and we got some great results. You can see all my light painting photos here.

Tomorrow I leave for Omaha to attend the Berkshire-Hathaway shareholders meeting. No, I am not a shareholder. I work for a company that is owned by Berkshire-Hathaway, and was invited to attend and work our booth this year. I am in the technology group, so it will be an interesting look into a side of the company that I never see.

Of course, while there I will be shooting, and hunting for great neon signs. I have already found at least 24 signs on Flickr that I know I want to shoot, and using google and a site called Community Walk, I put together a map of where the signs are. If you are interested, here is my Omaha Neon Map.

This Community Walk website seems like it would be a good resource for photowalkers. Has anybody else used it, or found something similar that you like to use when planning a photowalk?

Sailboat Forest

This was taken during a photowalk at the Emeryville Marina. The night started out foggy, but we were able to get some nice shots in the fog, and it cleared up slowly as the night progressed.
One of the people that had a boat docked at the Marina let us through the locked gate so we could do some shooting down on the dock as well. It was a fun night. Hopefully it will be clear next time and we can get some shots of the Bay Bridge.

Are you in the San Francisco Bay Area? Feel like doing a little night shooting tomorrow? Come on out to the Emeryville Marina tomorrow night. We’ll be meeting in the parking lot at the end of Powell around 6:00pm.
