This piece of public art is a relatively new figurative replica of a former statue located on the same site until 1940.
It is assumed the original was sacrificed to the war effort, but others say it may have blown over in a storm.
Modified from the original as it appeared in historical photos, the statue is intended to reflect the sensibility of turn of the century art which would fit with the architecture of the immediate surroundings.
Located at Park Place and Washington Avenue in Point Richmond.
Richmond has murals painted on and in many of it’s overpasses. I will be shooting them off and on as part of the 2008 Challenge. This one is where I-80 crosses Carlson Blvd.
Week 17 of the 2008 Challenge. This fire station is located at 2904 Hilltop Drive in Richmond.
This is the last of the seven Richmond fire stations that I will be shooting for the 2008 Challenge. I will eventually post a photo of the building that housed the first Richmond fire station, but that’s for later. Now I need to come up with something to shoot for next week.
This is the photograph for Week 2 of the 2008 Challenge.
Richmond, California, the 9th most dangerous city in America in 2007. The city I call home.
I have lived in major metropolitan areas since 1990, and I have come to accept that violence is just part of the city. Richmond, in particular, is plagued by gang violence, with murders occurring on a regular basis. The violence tends to be concentrated in certain areas, and is almost always obvious gang activity. However, on December 28th, 2007, even Richmond residents were surprised by the events at Sahib Restaurant.
Around 9PM, two unidentified scumbags shot and killed the owners of Sahib Restaurant. The motive is not known. The restaurant was not robbed. Just a random act of violence. The owners of Sahib were two of the nicest people you could ever have known. One of the brothers was a waiter there, and was always ready with a joke and a smile.
The photo above was taken at the location of Sahib Restaurant, which is now closed. People are leaving cards, notes, flowers, and candles there still.
